Araromi-Okeodo Celebrates 91-Year Power Miracle: Osun Community Lights Up
On a momentous occasion, Araromi-Okeodo, an Osun State community in Ife-South Local Government Area, erupted in jubilation as electricity was finally supplied to the town after a staggering 91-year wait. The long-awaited development prompted enthusiastic residents to gather in large numbers over the weekend, hailing it as the “miracle of the century.”
Oba Abbas Akanbi, the Alara of Araromi-Okeodo, led his dignitaries and subjects to the off-grid site of the 50-kilowatt Sholep Energy Firm, responsible for this remarkable achievement, during its official inauguration.
Expressing his astonishment, Oba Akanbi told reporters that he never believed he would witness the day when electricity would reach his town. He said, “We have heard countless promises of power supply to our community that never materialized. Even when we were informed about this solar power plant, we thought it was yet another empty pledge. Today, I stand as one of the most fulfilled individuals in the world. Our community will ensure the plant’s sustainability and provide it with the utmost protection as a token of our gratitude. We are confident that this development will usher in more growth and progress for our community.”
The Managing Director of Sholep Energy Limited, Engr Olalekan Adeleke, revealed that the multi-million naira project received funding from the company in collaboration with the World Bank and the Federal Government’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA). This off-grid power plant is expected to serve over 700 households and guarantee round-the-clock uninterrupted power supply to the community, along with free access to clean water.
Adeyemi Festus, the Osun State Commissioner for Energy, disclosed that the state is working alongside private investors to establish additional power plants in the region to attract investment. He assured that Governor Ademola Adeleke is committed to providing adequate security for the newly inaugurated power plant.
