Prominent human rights attorney Festus Ogun has formally requested a Coroner’s Inquest to thoroughly examine and ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragic passing of Nigerian music sensation Mohbad.
Ogun’s appeal, as disclosed in a letter published on his official Facebook page this Monday, was addressed to the Attorney-General of Lagos. The letter emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation, as stipulated in Sections 14 and 15 of the Coroner’s Systems Law of Lagos State, to unravel the cause and details of Mohbad’s untimely demise.
The letter stated, “In line with Sections 14 and 15 of the Coroner’s Systems Law of Lagos State, we hereby request for a Coroner’s Inquest to investigate and determine the cause and circumstances of Mohbad’s death.
“Importantly, we humbly request that you exercise the power under Section 17 of the Coroner’s System Law to order the exhumation of his body for the Chief Medical Examiner to anatomically determine the cause of his death.
“Upon conclusion of the Coroner’s inquest, we are hopeful that the findings of the investigation will be made public and those found wanting would be sanctioned by the appropriate authorities.”
It further urged the Attorney-General to invoke the authority vested in Section 17 of the Coroner’s System Law, which would enable the exhumation of the late singer’s body for a detailed anatomical examination by the Chief Medical Examiner, aimed at conclusively determining the cause of death.
The letter concluded with a call for transparency, stating, “Upon the conclusion of the Coroner’s Inquest, we maintain our hope that the results of the investigation will be made accessible to the public, and individuals found culpable will face appropriate sanctions, as determined by the relevant authorities.”
Mohbad, a talented artist, sadly passed away at the age of 27 on Tuesday, September 12.
