Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has successfully concluded negotiations with the President of the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, resulting in the immediate lifting of the UAE’s visa ban on Nigerian travelers.
This significant development was officially announced by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the Nigerian President on Media and Publicity. Ngelale also disclosed that as a direct consequence of this bilateral agreement, both Etihad Airlines and Emirates Airlines will promptly resume their flight operations to and from Nigeria.
In an official statement, it was explained, “As negotiated between the two Heads of State, this immediate restoration of flight activity, through these two airlines and between the two countries, does not involve any immediate payment by the Nigerian government.
Highlighting President Tinubu’s commitment to advancing economic diplomacy and the proposals presented during the discussions, the statement further clarified, “In recognition of President Tinubu’s economic development diplomacy drive and proposals today presented by President Tinubu to his counterpart, an agreed framework has been established, which will involve several billions of US dollars worth of new investments into the Nigerian economy across multiple sectors, including defense, agriculture and others, by the investment arms of the Government of the United Arab Emirates.
Additionally, the statement revealed that President Tinubu has successfully brokered a collaborative foreign exchange liquidity program between the two nations, with further details set to be unveiled in the coming weeks.
Expressing his appreciation for the cooperative relationship between Nigeria and the UAE, President Tinubu commended his UAE counterpart, stating, “I am pleased to have worked alongside the UAE President to fully restore and elevate the standard of relations between these two important nations.”
The visa ban imposed by the UAE on Nigerian and select African nationalities in 2022, which barred entry into Dubai, has been a matter of concern. In light of this, President Tinubu held discussions on Monday with UAE leadership, addressing the visa ban, resumption of flight services, and various diplomatic matters.
