Abuja, August 21, 2023 – In a significant development, Lateef Fagbemi, a distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has officially taken on the role of the nation’s 24th Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice. The inauguration ceremony took place at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, where President Bola Tinubu administered the oath of office to Mr. Fagbemi.
Following his swearing-in, Mr. Fagbemi promptly reported to the Federal Ministry of Justice in the capital city on Monday. Arriving at the ministry’s premises at 3:10 p.m., he was cordially welcomed by key figures, including Beatrice Jeddy-Agba, the Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Justice, along with various directors and heads of agencies and parastatals operating under the ministry.
Among the prominent personalities present were Buba Marwa, Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and Tony Ojukwu, Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The tour of the office and introductions to the ministry’s team were conducted by Mrs. Jeddy-Agba, acquainting Mr. Fagbemi with his new responsibilities and colleagues.
As the successor to Abubakar Malami, who served as the Attorney-General in the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for nearly eight years, Mr. Fagbemi steps into this pivotal role with an illustrious legal career spanning over four decades. During his vetting as the Chief Law Officer of Nigeria, he hinted at potential plans to streamline the country’s anti-corruption efforts by exploring the possibility of merging entities such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
In his assessment of law enforcement practices, Mr. Fagbemi expressed his concerns about the apprehension of individuals before the completion of proper investigations, advocating for a more balanced approach. He also criticized instances where law enforcement agencies disregarded court orders.
With this fresh perspective and extensive legal acumen, Nigerians are keenly watching as Mr. Fagbemi embarks on his tenure, aiming to steer the nation’s legal and justice systems toward enhanced efficiency and fairness.
