Witnesses at the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Umuahia have claimed that Governor Alex Otti contested the governorship election on the platform of the Labour Party without officially resigning his membership from the All Progressives Congress (APC). Two individuals provided testimony during the proceedings.
Friday Ugorji, who served as PW2 and holds the position of Chairman of Ward 5, Isiala Ngwa South LGA, testified that Alex Otti’s name remained at the top of the ward’s APC party register. Ugorji asserted that Otti did not follow the proper procedure for resignation and failed to submit any resignation letter.
He said: “Alex Otti left APC without due process and did not submit any resignation letter.”
Similarly, Engr Alozie Macsolomo, PW3, and the Director of Records, Documentations, and Mobilisation of the APC, confirmed that Otti had not resigned from the party following the Electoral Act. He pointed to paragraph 10 of his written deposition, which he had previously submitted as evidence.
In response to the petitioner’s case, Tochukwu Maduka, SAN, the lead counsel, concluded the presentation of their arguments.
The tribunal announced an adjournment until Tuesday, August 8, 2023, to allow the respondents to begin presenting their defense.
