Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, have announced their decision to separate, as revealed by Trudeau in a post on his Instagram account on Wednesday. The couple reached this difficult decision after engaging in many meaningful discussions.
Trudeau said after “many meaningful and difficult conversations” with Sophie, “we have made the decision to separate.”
“As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build,” he wrote.
Despite their separation, Trudeau emphasized that they will remain a close-knit family and maintain deep love and respect for each other, valuing everything they have built together and will continue to build. In consideration of their children’s well-being, he requested that their privacy be respected during this period.
Trudeau and Grégoire Trudeau’s love story began in Montreal, where Trudeau returned in 2002 after teaching in Vancouver for several years. It was there that he met Grégoire Trudeau, and they tied the knot in 2005. The couple is proud parents to their three children, Xavier, Ella-Grace, and Hadrien.
Before her marriage to Trudeau, Grégoire Trudeau pursued her education at the University of Montréal, earning a degree in communications. Her professional journey included work in sales, advertising, and eventually becoming a television and radio reporter.
Last year, Grégoire Trudeau commemorated their wedding anniversary on Instagram, reflecting on the challenges and rewards of a long-term relationship, stating that it requires constant effort, flexibility, compromise, devotion, and patience. She expressed that true love is one that provides safety, freedom, and growth.
Grégoire Trudeau said the pair had “navigated through sunny days, heavy storms, and everything in between, and it ain’t over.”
She added: “Long-term relationships are challenging in so many ways. They demand constant work, flexibility, compromise, sacrifice, devotion, patience, effort, and so much more. None of us are perfect, and so there is no perfect relationship, but love is only true when it keeps you safe, sets you free, and makes you grow.”
Despite their personal situation, Trudeau and Grégoire Trudeau have continued to fulfill their official duties. Recently, they attended King Charles’ coronation in London and met with US President Joe Biden in March.
