In order to ensure food security in Nasarawa State, the Nigerian Federal Government, in collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development, has provided 20 tricycles to 20 farmer groups in the state. This initiative was organized by the Value Chain Development Programme to aid the beneficiaries in transporting their farm produce to local markets in their communities without the burden of transportation costs.
During the distribution event in Lafia on Wednesday, Eunice Adgidzi, the state Programme Coordinator, revealed this development while addressing journalists. She emphasized that the program not only aims to improve market access for farmers but also to alleviate the hardships faced by impoverished farmers in the five benefiting local government areas impacted by the recent removal of petroleum subsidies.
She said, “I am delighted to be at the flag-off and distribution of Tricycles to 20 farmer groups drawn from farmers and youth organizations in Nasarawa State.
“For us in the Value Chain Development Programme, we see agriculture as a business. That is why we always do everything within our power to assist our farmers so that they can also contribute meaningfully to the growth of our dear state and Nigeria at large.
“Let me encourage our smallholder farmers in the five benefiting LGAs of Lafia, Doma, Wamba, Nasarawa, and Karu to use the tricycles to improve their livelihoods, especially now that the petroleum subsidy has been removed.”
During the speech, Isa Eya, the representative of the Permanent Secretary of Nasarawa State Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, expressed his appreciation for the initiative and commended the Federal Government (FG) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) for their efforts. He also assured that the state government would continue to provide unwavering support to ensure the program’s success in Nasarawa State.
One of the farmers, Rahab Ayuba, conveyed her gratitude to the FG and IFAD for empowering farmers with the tricycles and pledged to utilize them effectively for their intended purpose.
