A civil society organization, Human and Environmental Agenda (HEDA), has called for a comprehensive and immediate investigation into the alleged N1 billion car gifts provided by former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to his supporters in Kebbi State.
In a petition submitted to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), HEDA also requested a probe into corruption allegations and abuse of office levelled against Malami.
HEDA’s Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, signed the four-page petition, which was also copied to the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
The organization expressed concern over the lack of investigation by anti-corruption agencies regarding these allegations, which were reported in the media and supported by documentary evidence.
HEDA stated that this failure to investigate undermines the rule of law and contributes to a breakdown of law and order during Malami’s tenure as Minister of Justice.
Among the corruption allegations listed by HEDA is the “distribution of 30 car gifts worth over N1,000,000,000 to his supporters in Kebbi State.” The car gifts reportedly included:
14 Mercedes Benz vehicles.
Eight Prado SUVs.
Four Toyota Hilux trucks.
Four Lexus LX cars.
The beneficiaries were social media influencers, executive members of Malami’s Foundation, and women’s support groups.
Additionally, the group highlighted other allegations, such as the “illegal auctioning of sea vessels holding crude oil seized by the Federal Government” and Malami’s alleged involvement in the withdrawal of cases against individuals implicated in the Malabu scandal.
HEDA emphasized that it considers these allegations against the former AGF extremely serious and warrants a thorough investigation.
Efforts to reach the Special Assistant to Malami on Media, Dr Umar Gwandu, for a response were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
