The All Progressives Congress (APC), which is in power, has rescheduled its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting that was initially planned for Monday to accommodate the participation of President Bola Tinubu.
The party had previously set the dates for the National Caucus and NEC meetings on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, during the month of June.
However, in a statement released at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, the National Secretary of the party, Iyiola Omisore, declared the postponement of both events to the 18th and 19th of July.
President Tinubu departed the country on Saturday to attend the ECOWAS summit in Guinea Bissau.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially communicated to the members of the National Caucus and National Executive Committee (NEC) that the meetings originally scheduled for July 10th and 11th, 2023, have been postponed to July 18th and 19th, 2023, respectively. The party cited the regional and sub-regional commitments of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in his role as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as the reason for the postponement. The statement expressed regret for any inconvenience caused.
It is worth noting that this NEC meeting is the first since April 2022, when the decision-making authority of the APC NEC was transferred to the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party. This transfer of power was met with disapproval from some party members, including Salihu Lukman, the national vice chairman (North-west), who called for the removal of Abdullahi Adamu and Iyiola Omisore, accusing them of exercising discretionary power without consulting other NWC members, which he argued was against the party’s constitution.
Abdullahi Adamu, in addition to his disagreement with the NWC’s decision-making process, was recently involved in a dispute with the leadership of the National Assembly over the appointment of principal officers in both chambers. However, it was later announced that the rift had been resolved following a meeting with the president.
