An arrest has been made in Nnokwa, Idemili South Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra State, where a middle-aged woman is accused of setting a policewoman and her two children on fire.
The woman in question, named Nneamaka Nwosu, hails from Amawbia in Awka South LGA, Anambra State.
According to reports, Nwosu and the deceased policewoman crossed paths when the latter found herself without a home after getting divorced.
An anonymous resident of the area revealed that Nwosu sought shelter with the policewoman during her desperate housing situation following the divorce.
“As soon as the husband divorced her, she confided in the policewoman who benevolently offered her accommodation in her apartment.
“On that fateful day, she quarreled with the policewoman, which led to a fight. She hit the policewoman on the head with a pestle, and she fell and became unconscious.
“She quickly tied the policewoman and her two kids together with a rope inside their room and set them ablaze together with the building,” he said.
According to reports, the suspect was caught by a local vigilante and several villagers who noticed the fire and attempted to flee.
During the vigilante’s questioning, she initially denied any involvement, stating that it was a gas explosion while the deceased and her children were boiling water.
Eventually, Nwosu admitted to the crime, stating that it was the result of the devil’s influence.
“I did not know what came over me that made me commit the crime. I deserve to be shot dead for this wicked act against the person who helped me in my time of need,” she said.
DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, affirmed the occurrence by stating that the suspect had been apprehended and the bodies of the policewoman and her children had been taken to the mortuary.
Ikenga mentioned that the case had been transferred to the State Investigation Department (CID) for additional investigation and prosecution.
He said, “Preliminary information reveals that the policewoman accommodated the suspect while she was searching for a house.
“The two women had a disagreement which resulted in a fight before the suspect hit the woman police on her head with a pestle.
“While she became unconscious, she tied her with her two kids and set them ablaze. The bodies of the victims have been recovered and deposited in the morgue. Further development shall be communicated,” Ikenga promised.
