Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, the immediate past Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), has strongly criticized Nigerians who oppose the proliferation of universities, dismissing their views as limited and shortsighted.

During the handover ceremony to the Deputy Executive Secretary, Chris Maiyaki, in Abuja on Friday, Rasheed expressed his desire to see the number of universities in Nigeria reach 4,000, as he believes the existing ones are insufficient to meet the tertiary education needs of Nigerians.

He argued against the common notion that most graduates lack employment opportunities after completing their studies, stating that such concerns are unwarranted, as education remains the most effective tool to combat poverty.

Additionally, the former NUC secretary pointed out that countries with fewer resources and smaller populations than Nigeria have a more significant number of universities.
