On Monday, June 19, 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu designated Deputy Comptroller General (DCG) Adewale Bashir Adeniyi as the Acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service.
According to a statement released by Mr. Willie Bassey, the Director of Information representing the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the appointment of the new Customs CG follows the approval by President Tinubu and the retirement of the incumbent Service Chiefs, along with the appointment of their successors.
The statement clarified that the appointed Service Chiefs, including the CGC, are serving in an acting capacity until their confirmation by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Adeniyi has been a member of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for over thirty years, having held various positions within the organization. He was the longest-serving National Public Relations Officer of Customs from June 2003 to May 2011. Also, he fulfilled the role of Commandant of the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College in Gwagwalada, Abuja.
He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in International Relations from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, in June 1987 and a Master of Arts degree in Communication Science from the Universitaire Svizzera D’Italiana (USI) in Lugano, Switzerland, in November 2013.
DCG Adeniyi has received numerous accolades throughout his career and was honored with the National Honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) by former President Muhammadu Buhari in October 2022.
