Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, paid a visit to President Bola Tinubu at the State House following his inauguration as the 10th Senate President.
Akpabio, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Akwa Ibom, emerged victorious in a closely contested election, securing 66 votes against his opponent Abdullazeez Yari, who represented APC Zamfara and garnered 43 votes.
Prior to his role as Senate President, Akpabio served as the governor of Akwa Ibom State. At the same time, Yari, a first-term Senator, previously held the position of governor in Zamfara State.

During the election process, two other contenders, Orji Uzor-Kalu (APC Abia), a former governor, and Osita Izunaso (APC Imo) withdrew from the race following persuasion from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the President.
It is worth mentioning that the APC National Working Committee (NWC) had designated the position of Senate President to the South-South region, specifically to Akpabio, who graciously stepped aside for President Tinubu during the APC Convention at Eagle Square in Abuja in 2022.
