An Irish court has sentenced a 25-year-old Nigerian man named Utseoritselaju Uwatse to four years in prison for sexually assaulting a fellow college student in Ireland. According to the Irish Mirror, the incident occurred on April 20, 2018, and Uwatse was found guilty of one count of rape in March 2023.
According to Detective Garda McGrath’s testimony, a group of college students gathered for drinks at Cratloe Student Village before heading to Limerick City for a night out on the day of the incident. The victim, a group member, stated during her testimony that they went to Smyth’s pub and later visited Molloy’s late bar in Limerick, where she encountered Uwatse, someone she knew casually.
CCTV footage presented in court showed Uwatse and the victim hugging each other that night. As the court proceedings unfolded, it was revealed that Uwatse lifted the victim, carried her into a bedroom, and placed her on the bed. She recalled him removing her shoes before falling asleep. The following morning, she woke up feeling something was off with her clothes and noticed Uwatse beside her.
