In response to the ongoing killings in Plateau State’s Mangu and Riyom Local Government Areas, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) yesterday issued a warning against retaliatory assaults.
According to CAN, about 130 people have died in the past week, 1,000 structures have burned, and 22 communities have been impacted.
“I address the nation on the recent resurgence of mindless killings of innocent citizens in Mangu and Riyom Local Government Areas of Plateau State, Nigeria,” said Archbishop Daniel Okoh, president of CAN, in a statement released in Abuja.
Many people have died and lost property due to the killings that allegedly unidentified gunmen began carrying out in Mangu villages on Monday, May 15, 2023. Many people are still unaccounted for.
Fungzai, Hale, Kubwat, Bwoi, and several other localities in the Kombun District of the Mangu Local Government Area and a few communities in the Riyom Local Government Area are among the impacted villages.
“Reports state that 22 villages were impacted, 130 people were murdered, and 1,000 structures were burned. In the greatest terms imaginable, we denounce these heinous actions. It is heartbreaking to witness innocent people being slain and their homes being destroyed in such a heinous way.
